Privacy policy
We collect only what Yani needs to teach you, we keep your voice on your device, and we never sell your data. Here's the detail.
Last updated
Draft – pending legal review. This is a plain-English draft. It may change before Yani launches publicly.
Who we are
Yani is run by Yani (company name pending) (“Yani”, “we”, “us”) at yani.study. We decide how your personal data is used for Yani, so we're responsible for it. Questions or requests: hello@yani.study.
The short version
- We store your email, the choices that shape your path, your progress and your passes.
- Your voice recordings stay on your device. We don't upload or store them.
- We never sell your data, and we don't show ads.
- You can ask for a copy of your data, or for us to delete it, at any time.
What we store, and why
Your account
Your email address, so you can sign in and we can send receipts and reminders. A display name, if you add one.
Your path
The situations and people you choose, your level, your daily minutes and your spelling style, so we can build your path. If you choose to tell us your gender, we use it to show phrases in the right form, because Emirati changes how some things are said by and to men and women. It's optional, and you can change or remove it at any time.
Your progress
How each practice went (right, close or not yet), your review schedule, your karak card, your XP, goals and errands, so Yani knows what to bring back and when.
Majlis groups
The groups you join, and what members can see: your display name, your karak card, your minutes practised and the XP you add to the weekly goal. Never your recordings, your answers or your email.
Passes and payments
Which pass you bought, the amount, the date, the payment reference and the receipt number. Payments are processed by Ziina. Your card details go to Ziina, not to us, and we never see or store them.
Messages to us
What you send through the contact form or feedback, with your email, so we can reply.
Reminders
If you allow notifications, your browser's push subscription and the times you like to practise, so we can remind you.
Technical and usage data
Basic logs (such as IP address, browser and device type) to keep Yani secure and working, and error reports when something breaks. We also count how features are used (for example, “session completed”) to improve Yani. These events are tied to an account number, not your name or email. On our public pages we also count which parts of a page come into view, with no account, no cookie and nothing that identifies you.
Voice recordings
Your voice stays on your device.
Yani doesn't upload your recordings to our servers, and doesn't store them, by default.
- When you practise speaking, Yani uses your browser's built-in speech recognition to check what you said. The check runs in your browser.
- When you record yourself to compare your voice with the native speaker's, the recording stays in your browser's memory and is discarded when you leave the exercise.
- We keep only the result, such as “close”, as part of your progress.
- Your browser's speech recognition is provided by your browser or phone maker. Depending on your device and settings, they may process the audio on their own servers (for example, Google in Chrome, or Apple on iPhone) under their privacy terms. Yani never receives that audio.
- If we ever offer a feature that sends your voice to us, such as more detailed pronunciation scoring, it will be off by default and we'll ask for your permission first.
- You can say no to microphone access at any time. Listening exercises still work.
The law we follow
We handle personal data in line with the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on the Protection of Personal Data, and with other data protection laws where they apply to you. In general terms, we use your data:
- to provide the service you signed up for: your account, path, progress and passes;
- with your consent, for optional things such as your gender or push reminders. You can withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what happened before;
- to keep Yani secure and to improve it, in ways you'd reasonably expect and that don't override your rights;
- to meet legal duties, such as keeping payment records.
Who we share it with
We use trusted providers to run Yani. They process data only on our instructions and must keep it safe:
- Supabase, for our database and sign-in;
- Cloudflare, for storing and delivering audio;
- our hosting provider, which runs the website and app;
- Ziina, for payments and refunds;
- Resend, for email;
- PostHog, for product analytics, and Sentry, for error reports.
We don't sell or rent your data, and we don't share it with advertisers. We'd only share it with others if the law requires it.
Where your data is stored
Some of our providers store data outside the UAE, for example in the European Union or the United States. When data leaves the UAE, we rely on the safeguards UAE law allows, such as contracts that require the same level of protection.
How long we keep it
- Your account, path and progress: while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete them within 30 days, and from backups within a further 30 days.
- Payment records: as long as UAE tax and commercial law requires.
- Messages to support: up to two years, so we can follow up.
- Technical logs: up to 90 days.
Cookies and storage on your device
We use a small number of essential cookies to keep you signed in and secure. Yani also saves a few things on your device: your light or dark theme, whether sound is on, and today's practice, so it works offline. We don't use advertising cookies or cross-site trackers, so there's no cookie banner to click through.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your personal data, in a format you can take elsewhere;
- correct anything that's wrong;
- delete your data;
- stop or limit how we use it, or object to a particular use;
- stop using it for anything you consented to.
Email hello@yani.study from the address on your account, or use the contact page. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the UAE Data Office.
Keeping it safe
Data is encrypted in transit, access is limited to the people who need it, and our database checks on every request that you can only see your own data.
Children
Yani is designed for adults. You must be 18 or over to buy a pass, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's or guardian's permission to use Yani.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we'll tell you by email or in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows when this policy last changed.
